Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz says the Black Stars must treat qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations as their first major objective before thinking about winning the tournament.
Ghana will begin their qualifying campaign against Cote d’Ivoire in Bouake on Thursday, with Queiroz stressing the importance of securing qualification.
The Portuguese coach believes every national team has a specific competition to focus on at this stage, and for Ghana, that means navigating the qualifying campaign successfully.
“We are here to play to win one specific competition, and all national teams in this moment they have one specific competition called qualification. That’s the first cup that you have to win,” Queiroz said.
The Black Stars missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after failing to qualify for the tournament.
Queiroz has since returned for a second spell in charge and is tasked with guiding Ghana back to the continental competition.
Ghana will face Cote d’Ivoire in their opening Group C fixture before returning home to host The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 27.
The Black Stars are in Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia.
