Bawumia To Minority: Stay Focused On $1.7bn Loss

The Flagbeaerer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed full confidence in Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin and backed the Minority’s decision to pursue accountability over the reported $1.7 billion loss involving GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana.

According to Mr Afenyo-Markin in a Facebook Post, Dr Bawumia conveyed the support during a meeting between the two at his private residence in Accra on Monday, August 24, 2026 ahead of Parliament’s emergency sitting.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said the meeting focused on party matters and the agenda of the Minority as Parliament reconvened for the emergency sitting called by the Speaker.

“Dr Bawumia expressed his full confidence in my leadership of the Minority,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said in a statement posted on Facebook.

He said the NPP flagbearer urged him to remain focused on the reported loss of more than $1.7 billion, equivalent to 1.5 per cent of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which he attributed to the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

Mr Afenyo-Markin further said Dr Bawumia cautioned him against being distracted by attempts to divert public attention from the matter.

According to the Minority Leader, Dr Bawumia also called on the Minority, under his leadership, to use the rules of Parliament to ensure the government is held accountable over the reported loss.He said the NPP flagbearer commended the Minority for its efforts so far.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said he assured Dr Bawumia that the issue remained firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament resumes.

“I assured him that this is a national task the Minority intends to prosecute to the fullest extent of our ability, with the very best of intentions and minded always by the interests of the Ghanaian people,” he said.

He said the reported loss was firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament reconvened.“I further informed him that this colossal loss, under the watch of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana, is firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament reconvenes,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said.

The Minority Leader maintained that the caucus would continue to pursue the matter until it obtaines answers for the Ghanaian people.

“We remain resolute in this commitment, and we will not relent until the Ghanaian people receive the answers they deserve,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said the $1.7 billion figure was confirmed by the International Monetary Fund’s August 2026 report.
