The Northern Regional Office of MTN Ghana on December 25 presented 30 hampers to mothers who delivered on Christmas Day at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) and Tamale West Hospital, as part of efforts to share in the festive spirit and support families at a critical moment.
A total of 16 hampers were distributed at TTH, while 14 went to mothers at the Tamale West Hospital labour ward. The initiative forms part of MTN Ghana’s nationwide corporate social responsibility programme, which supports mothers who give birth on December 25 each year, targeting about 700 baby hampers across all 16 regions.
The gesture is aimed at strengthening MTN’s bond with host communities and supporting families during an important stage of life. The hampers contained essential baby care items, including diapers, wipes, detergents, comforters, feeding bowls, feeding bottles and other toiletries.
The beneficiary mothers expressed gratitude to MTN for celebrating with them during the festive season and easing the financial burden of purchasing baby items. One of the mothers said, “We are humbled by your gifts. They will help us avoid spending huge amounts of money on items needed to care for our babies.”
Presenting the items on behalf of MTN, a representative of the Regional Manager, Mohammed Shayawu, said the company regularly initiates programmes to support customers in various ways, including celebrating with mothers who have had safe deliveries on Christmas Day.
According to him, the initiative is meant to give back to society and delight customers, adding that the continued patronage of MTN Ghana’s services makes it possible for the company to sustain such community interventions.

Ramila Abubakari, a beneficiary, said the surprise package had brought relief and joy to her family, as money that would have been spent on baby items could now be used to support her elder sister.
Another beneficiary, Mohammed Musharifa, commended the company for the gesture and urged it to continue improving network coverage, especially in rural communities.
Madam Fauzia Adam, a Senior Midwife at TTH, said the donation brought joy to both mothers and health workers and strengthened the hospital’s collaboration with MTN Ghana. She noted that beyond baby items, the company’s support also contributes to hospital operations, including communication for referrals and coordination with patients’ relatives.
At Tamale West Hospital, the Senior Midwife and Night Shift In-Charge of the Labour Ward, Madam Rahama Yakubu, said the donation brought relief to mothers with limited resources to begin motherhood. She cited the case of a recent senior high school graduate who struggled to afford basic baby items but was supported through the MTN initiative.

She also used the occasion to appeal for support to improve infrastructure at the ward, noting that limited capacity often forces management to discharge mothers earlier than medically ideal.
“The limited ward space sometimes compels us to discharge mothers quickly to make room for others, even when it would be better to observe both mother and child for a longer period before discharge,” she said.
