The West African Chapter of the global Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) Society has elected and subsequently inaugurated a new governing council, which was sworn into office on January 7, 2025 at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. The brief transition ceremony brought together insurance practitioners, CPCU designees and industry stakeholders who are collectively committed to strengthening professional standards within the sector.
The newly constituted council is led by its new President, Abubakari Salifu, the recently appointed General Manager – Business Development of Priority Insurance. His administration has outlined a strategic focus on working closely with the global CPCU society. Priority areas under the new leadership include mentorship, volunteering, professional training in insurance and risk management, student engagement and stronger industry collaboration.
Handing over the reins of office, Justice Peprah Agyei, the immediate past president – who continues as a member of the council – assured the new leadership of his unwavering support and expressed his appreciation to members for their support and dedication to professional excellence.
The CPCU Society is an association of risk management and insurance professionals dedicated to fostering excellence in the insurance industry worldwide. Ghana now serves as West Africa’s hub for the global association.
The West Africa CPCU Society Candidate Chapter serves as a platform for insurance professionals, CPCU designees and aspiring CPCU candidates alike, providing opportunities for networking, professional development and knowledge sharing by fostering a community of like-minded individuals committed to excellence and innovation.
To do this, the West Africa Chapter organises educational seminars, workshops and webinars to enhance professional knowledge and skills; facilitates networking and collaboration to promote innovation within the insurance sector; engages in community outreach and corporate social responsibility initiatives to promote insurance literacy; provides a strong advocacy voice for policies and regulations that support industry growth and stability; and provides mentorship and support for individuals pursuing the CPCU designation.
The CPCU designation, globally recognised as a symbol of expertise, ethical conduct and continuous professional development, continues to play a central role in strengthening industry standards. In 2025, another 36 insurance professionals earned the CPCU designation through the West Africa Chapter of the association.
A statement from the association has enthused that “their achievements reflect the growing depth of professional expertise within Ghana and the broader West African insurance industry and underscore the chapter’s mission to raise standards through education, ethics and collaboration.”
