Suhum Senior High Technical School (SUTESCO) and the Kibi Presbyterian College of Education have emerged as the grand champions of the first-ever J.B. Danquah senior high inter-school (SHS) quiz competition and inter-tertiary debate.

The event, held under the distinguished patronage of the Twafohene of Akyem Abuakwa, Okatakyie Boakye Danquah Ababio, and in collaboration with the Danquah Institute, was organised to commemorate the 61st anniversary of the legendary statesman, Dr. Joseph Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Danquah.
The competitions tested the reasoning, advocacy, and clarity of thought of students across the Akyem Abuakwa enclave.
In the SHS quiz category, SUTESCO outperformed formidable rivals, including Abuakwa State College (ABUSCO), Ofori Panin SHS, and Begoro Presec to secure the top spot.
On the tertiary front, the host institution, Kibi Presbyterian College of Education, demonstrated superior debating skills to defeat the University College of Agricultural and Environmental Studies (UCAES), walking away with the coveted championship trophy.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Patriots
The event was chaired by the Okyehemaa, Aberewa Dokua, who emphasised the importance of the event theme: “Celebrating the Intellectual Legacy of Dr. J.B. Danquah: Inspiring Scholarship, Patriotism, and Constitutional Thought.”
She urged the youth to emulate Danquah’s commitment to service, noting that there is pride in patriotism.
Special Guest, Barima Yaw Oppong Kodie, a Justice of the Court of Appeal and the Mawerehere of Akyem Abuakwa, encouraged the students to pursue legal studies regardless of their primary academic background.
He pledged his personal support to assist high-performing students who aspire to enter the legal profession, emphasising that a foundational knowledge of the law is essential for any modern career.
The Executive Director of the Danquah Institute, Dr. Antoinette Tsiboe-Darko, challenged the participants to understand the weight of the freedoms they enjoy today.
She noted that J.B. Danquah’s unwavering belief in individual liberty provides the foundation for the freedom of speech currently exercised by the youth and the media.

Expanding the Legacy
While this maiden edition was centered in Kyebi, the organisers have plans for national expansion.
Head of Events for the Office of the Twafohene, Gideon Kwasi Annor, revealed that future iterations of the competition might move to other regions, such as the Central Region, to ensure the statesman’s intellectual exploits are celebrated nationwide.
Individual Honors and Special Awards
The competition also recognised exceptional individual talents, including Gloria Donkor, who received two honours -the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Award for Outstanding Advocacy and the Okatakyie Boakye Danquah Ababio Award for Distinguished Intellectual Performance.
Agyei Benedicta was honoured with the Abrewa Dokua Award for Outstanding Female Intellectual Excellence, whilst Abuakwa State College (ABUSCO) secured the Danquah Institute Award for the focused round of the quiz competition.
