South Africa's head coach Hugo Broos pinpointed his team's failure to convert key opportunities as the primary reason for their disappointing exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Bafana Bafana were eliminated 2-1 by Cameroon in the Round of 16, a setback following their third-place finish at the previous tournament.
Broos expressed frustration that his side's strong start did not yield the crucial opening goal. "We started very well in the game, and we had chances to score. I think if we had scored, we can never lose the game," he stated in a post-match interview.
He acknowledged the resilience shown by Cameroon, a side that entered the tournament under turbulent circumstances with coach David Pagou having taken charge just weeks prior.
The Belgian tactician lamented the missed chances that could have changed the match's outcome, even in the latter stages. "Even we had the chances to score two goals and to have a draw, but it was not our day," Broos added.
With their AFCON campaign now concluded, the focus for South Africa shifts entirely to qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as they aim to rebound from this continental setback.
