Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito and his assistant, Prince Yaw Owusu, have been charged by the Ghana Football Association’s Disciplinary Committee following their side’s controversial draw against Bibiani GoldStars.
In a statement released on Monday, the GFA confirmed that both coaches are alleged to have breached Article 12(1)(i) of the GFA Disciplinary Code, relating to unsporting conduct.
The charges stem from Kotoko’s goalless encounter with the Ghanaian giants over the weekend, a match that ended in frustration for the Porcupine Warriors.
Zito and Owusu are accused of exhibiting unsporting behaviour towards match officials after what Kotoko believed were contentious decisions during the game.
Tensions flared late in the contest when defender Samba O’Neil appeared to have broken the deadlock with a header from a corner, only for the goal to be disallowed for an alleged foul in the build-up. The decision sparked protests from the Kotoko technical bench, culminating in the disciplinary action now being pursued.
Both coaches have been given until Wednesday, January 21, to submit their responses to the charges.
The draw has further dented Kotoko’s title ambitions, dropping the club to fourth on the league table and leaving them eight points adrift of leaders Medeama SC as the Premier League race intensifies.
