The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has shed light on the crucial role new assistant coach Desmond Ofei plays within the Black Stars' technical staff, describing him as a meticulous "game reader" who provides vital in-match intelligence to head coach Otto Addo.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum detailed Ofei's unique contributions in an interview with Sporty FM, following Ofei's permanent appointment to the backroom team after a successful stint with Ghana's U-20 side.
"Desmond is more like a game reader or an analyst. He sits on the bench and picks up some of the petty things that his boss (Otto Addo) may not have picked up," Asante Twum explained. He emphasised that this attention to detail extends beyond live analysis into the team's preparation, particularly on set pieces.
Ofei works in close coordination with assistant coach Gregory. According to Asante Twum, this partnership has yielded tangible results: "In the last five games of the qualifiers during the technical shakeup, we scored more goals from set pieces. It’s because of these combinations that joined."
The communication director outlined a structured approach where Ofei handles defensive set-piece drills while Gregory focuses on attacking routines, allowing head coach Otto Addo to oversee the broader tactical picture.
Ofei's promotion to the senior team came after he led Ghana's U-20 side, the Black Satellites, to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. His integration into Otto Addo's staff is seen as a strategic move to bolster the team's technical depth and analytical capabilities.
With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, the GFA and fans will be hoping this refined technical team, with Desmond Ofei as its analytical eyes on the bench, can guide the Black Stars to a successful campaign on the global stage.
