Nations FC head coach Frimpong Manso has played down his side’s chances of mounting a Ghana Premier League title challenge this season, insisting his focus is firmly on rebuilding the team and progressing in the MTN FA Cup. The Abrankese-based club has endured a difficult campaign, with a poor start to the season culminating in the dismissal of former coach Kasim Mingle. Manso, who took over amid the struggles, believes the current realities make a league title push unrealistic. Speaking in an interview with Akoma FM, the former Black Stars defender pointed to the gap between Nations FC and the league’s leading sides, the quality of the opposition, and the departure of key players as major obstacles. “At the moment, we are not talking about winning the league. Our priority is to make sure we put the team in a very good position. When you look at where we are on the table, the gap between us and the front runners, and also consider the quality of those teams, it becomes clear that it will be very difficult,” he said. He added that recent changes within the squad have further shaped his outlook for the league campaign. “We have also lost a number of key players, and for these reasons, this is not the time to talk about the league title. Perhaps we can focus on the FA Cup, but as far as the league is concerned, it will be very, very challenging." With Nations FC through to the Round of 16 of the MTN FA Cup, Manso says that competition has now become his primary objective. “I’m not thinking about the league title at the moment. My attention is firmly on the FA Cup. We are in the Round of 16, and that is where my focus lies — trying to win and move forward in the competition,” he noted. Meanwhile, Nations FC will return to league action this weekend when they face Medeama SC in their Matchday 21 fixture at the Dr Kwame Kyei Sports Complex.
