Borussia Dortmund have officially launched the BVB International Academy Ghana, marking the club’s first International Academy on the African continent.
The academy opens in Accra in February 2026 and represents a significant step in youth football development in Ghana.
The project is established in partnership with Accra Shooting Stars FC and will provide structured football education for boys and girls aged between 6 and 18. Participants will be trained using Borussia Dortmund’s internationally recognised development methodology, with a focus on discipline, leadership, education, nutrition and personal growth, while remaining rooted in Ghana’s football culture.
Benedikt Scholz, Director of Internationalisation and Commercial Partnerships and Managing Director of BVB Football Academy, described the launch as a long-term commitment to Ghanaian football. He noted that the club has maintained strong links with the country over the years through former players such as Otto Addo and Ibrahim Tanko, adding that the academy aims to build sustainable structures for youth development in collaboration with local partners.
Academy Director Teddy Hiadzi said the initiative is designed to be inclusive, catering for both recreational and elite pathways. According to him, the academy’s priority is to offer quality coaching, a clear structure and a safe environment that supports players’ development on and off the pitch.
Former Borussia Dortmund midfielder and Black Stars legend Ibrahim Tanko, who will serve as ambassador for the academy, described the project as a special opportunity for young Ghanaian players. He said the academy would help nurture not only technical ability but also the mindset and discipline required to succeed at the highest level.
The BVB International Academy Ghana will be based at Achimota School and will operate as an official member of Borussia Dortmund’s global International Academy network. Enrollment for the first intake is currently underway, with information sessions and football camps planned in collaboration with local schools.
