Belgian second-tier side Zulte Waregem have named Ghanaian duo Joseph Opoku and Dirk Asare as nominees for the club's Player of the Month award for April, following their crucial roles in helping the team avoid relegation.
The club entered the month in serious danger of dropping to the third division, sitting just two points above the relegation playoff zone. However, a string of positive results in April, including vital wins over Lommel SK and RFC Liège, secured their survival in the Belgian Challenger Pro League with one match to spare.
Opoku, an attacking midfielder, was instrumental in the turnaround, scoring two goals and providing one assist in four April appearances.
His creativity and eye for goal provided the spark Zulte Waregem desperately needed in the final third. Meanwhile, defensive midfielder Dirk Asare delivered composed and gritty performances, breaking up opposition attacks and shielding the backline during high-pressure matches.
The nominations reflect growing recognition for both players, who joined the Belgian club in the summer of 2025. Opoku, 22, has now registered six goals and four assists for the season, while Asare, 21, has become a regular fixture in the starting eleven.
Fans will vote for the winner, but regardless of the outcome, both Ghanaians have already won the respect of the club and its supporters for their part in keeping Zulte Waregem in the second tier.
