The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unanimously endorsed Gianni Infantino for re-election as president of FIFA for the 2027-2031 term.
The decision was reached during a meeting of CAF Member Associations held on April 29, 2026, in Vancouver, Canada, under the leadership of CAF president Patrice Motsepe.
CAF confirmed that all 54 member associations agreed to support Infantino ahead of the next FIFA Congress, underlining Africa’s strong and unified position within global football governance.
With Africa representing one of the largest voting blocs in FIFA, the endorsement is seen as a major boost for Infantino as he prepares for the 2027 election.
Infantino, who was first elected in 2016, has already served three mandates, including an initial period that began mid-cycle. There has been ongoing debate over whether that first term counts fully under FIFA’s three-term limit, potentially allowing him to seek another four-year mandate.
During his tenure, Africa has benefited from several FIFA initiatives, including increased World Cup slots and development funding through FIFA Forward programmes. The expansion of the FIFA World Cup to 48 teams will see more African nations participate in the 2026 tournament.
The next FIFA presidential election will take place at the 77th FIFA Congress in 2027, which is set to be hosted in Morocco.
CAF’s backing positions Infantino strongly as he looks to secure another term in office.
