Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, Fred Pappoe, has described Michael Essien as the greatest footballer Ghana has ever produced. Essien, who began his career at Liberty Professionals, is widely regarded as one of the finest talents to emerge from Ghana’s domestic league. His rise took him to Europe, where he first featured for French side Brest before earning a move to Olympique Lyon. Following standout performances in Ligue 1, Essien secured a high-profile transfer to Chelsea, where he enjoyed the peak of his career, winning several major trophies and establishing himself as one of the most influential midfielders of his generation. When asked to name his all-time best Ghanaian player in an interview with Sporty FM, Pappoe did not hesitate in selecting Essien, while also acknowledging Asamoah Gyan’s impact as a prolific striker. "I will say Michael Essien. Looking at how he rose and the clubs he played for, they are incredible and have the impact he made," he said. "Even though his days with the national team were up and down for me, it would be Essien. "Asamoah Gyan was a good goalscorer in terms of the World Cup, and so in terms of goalscoring, Gyan will be my best player, but Essien remains my best player," he added. Essien’s club career also included spells at Real Madrid and AC Milan, further underlining his pedigree at the highest level of the game. On the international stage, he represented Ghana at the 2006 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, earning 59 caps and scoring nine goals for the Black Stars. He is currently involved in coaching, serving as an assistant coach at Danish side FC Nordsjaelland.
