Ghanaian winger Francis Amuzu was on target as Gremio cruised to a clinical 3â0 away win over Deportivo Riestra in the Copa Sudamericana group stage.
Amuzu struck just before the hour, timing his run perfectly to finish calmly from a Gabriel Mec pass on 59 minutes and put Gremio firmly in control at 2â0.
Carlos Vinicius had opened the scoring from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark after sustained pressure from the Brazilian side. Deportivo Riestra struggled to create clear chances despite a spirited start, managing only one shot on target against Gremio’s well-organised back line. The visitors stayed compact, absorbed pressure and then punished their hosts in transition, with Amuzu’s direct running constantly unsettling the defence.
Martin Braithwaite came off the bench to add a third in the 73rd minute, finishing from a Cristian Pavon assist to seal the points and cap a dominant performance.
The result keeps Gremio in a strong position in Group F as they continue their push for knockout qualification. Luis Castro’s men now turn their attention back to Serie A, where they host Flamengo on Sunday, May 10, in what promises to be a major early-season test.
