Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei says Ghana’s upcoming international friendly against Mexico will provide a crucial benchmark as the team continues its build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana are scheduled to face the North American side on May 22 in a high-profile warm-up match designed to sharpen the squad ahead of the global tournament later this year.
Speaking to Flashscore, Ofei stressed the quality of the opposition and the value of the encounter in shaping the team’s progress.
"Mexico is a top-level opponent with a strong football culture, great intensity, and international experience, so this will be an important test for our group," he said.
"These are the types of matches that help players grow, help coaches evaluate, and help a nation continue building for the future," Ofei added.
The fixture forms part of Ghana’s broader preparation programme for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Black Stars are expected to conclude their preparatory games on June 2 with a friendly against Wales.
Four-time African champions Ghana will head to the tournament aiming to end a long wait for knockout-stage progress. Drawn in Group L, they will face England, Croatia and Panama.
Their campaign begins against Panama on June 17, followed by a clash with England on June 23, before wrapping up the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
Ghana have exited at the group stage in both the 2014 and 2022 editions and will be targeting a return to the round of 16 for the first time since 2010.
