Ghana will begin their 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a difficult Group D clash against Algeria on Thursday evening in Rabat.
The Black Starlets return to the continental stage carrying the hopes of a country with a proud history in youth football, having previously won the tournament in 1995 and 1999.
Ghana secured qualification after an impressive WAFU B campaign under coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, reaching the final before narrowly losing to Ivory Coast on penalties.
Speaking ahead of the opening match, Ogum said the players are mentally prepared and highly motivated for the challenge ahead.
“The mood in camp is very positive and focused. The players understand the importance of representing Ghana at this level, and they have shown great commitment throughout our preparations,” Ogum told CAFOnline.
Group D is considered one of the toughest at the tournament, with Senegal and South Africa also competing for qualification to the knockout stage and the FIFA U17 World Cup. Despite the difficult challenge, Ogum believes his side has the quality and discipline to compete strongly.
The Ghana coach expects a tactical and competitive contest against Algeria and has urged his players to remain disciplined and clinical in front of goal.
The Black Starlets head into the game after weeks of preparations in Morocco and will be aiming to make a strong start to their AFCON campaign.
