Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has declared his preference for working with big-ego players, insisting that such strong personalities are essential for Ghana’s success at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on the Ghana Football Association’s Beyond the Whistle podcast, the veteran manager clarified that the presence of high-profile characters in the dressing room is not a detriment but a tactical necessity for psychological warfare on the global stage.
Queiroz, who was appointed in April 2026 to replace Otto Addo following a string of poor results, emphasized that his primary task is aligning individual pride with national interest.
According to the former Real Madrid boss, a team without self-belief fails to intimidate world-class opponents, a factor he believes will be crucial when Ghana faces Panama and England in Group L.
“Tell me one thing: you have your ego, I have my ego, and everybody has egos in life. The problem is not to have egos, it's just to put the egos at the service of the national team.
“And I am very much confident, I saw the games, the players from Ghana, they do that, they commit themselves.
“Sometimes we don't win, sometimes it's not possible, other things, but it's not the issue of the egos. So I love to work with egos.”
The 73-year-old coach is on a short-term mission to lead the Black Stars in North America.
