Former Black Stars midfielder Laryea Kingston has denied long-standing claims that he became physical after being dropped from Ghana’s squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Speaking to 3Sports, Kingston said he was emotional and disappointed by the decision but insisted stories suggesting he reacted violently were false.
“I did not take the decision lightly. I was very emotional and spoke strongly because I was hurt by the situation. But the claims that I became physical are completely false. That part of the story has never been true,” he said.
Kingston explained that he received the news late at night while in camp with the Black Stars ahead of the tournament.
According to the former Hearts of Oak midfielder, teammate Quincy Owusu-Abeyie woke him up to inform him that the team manager wanted to see him.
He said he was later informed in a meeting involving the technical team and Ghana Football Association officials that he would not make the final squad for the World Cup.
Kingston also revealed that former GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi tried to console him by suggesting there would be future opportunities with the national team.
Ghana eventually reached the quarter-finals in South Africa, their best-ever World Cup performance.
