New Zealand and Egypt will both continue their search for a first-ever FIFA World Cup victory when they meet in a crucial Group G clash in Vancouver.
After both sides settled for draws in their opening matches, this encounter could play a major role in deciding who advances to the Round of 32.
Match Preview
New Zealand head into the match with mixed emotions after a dramatic 2-2 draw against Iran in their opening fixture.
The All Whites twice took the lead in that contest but were unable to hold on for victory. Head coach Darren Bazeley praised his side’s fighting spirit but admitted disappointment at letting two valuable points slip away.
The draw means New Zealand have now drawn all four of their World Cup matches this century. Another stalemate would see them equal Belgium’s tournament record of five consecutive World Cup draws, set in 2002.
However, New Zealand’s recent form remains a concern. The Oceania side have managed just one victory in their last 12 matches, alongside two draws and nine defeats.
Egypt also endured frustration in their opener after surrendering a 1-0 lead to draw 1-1 against Group G favourites Belgium.
The Pharaohs looked on course for a famous win before being pegged back, but the performance still offered encouragement for Hossam Hassan’s side.
With all four teams in Group G drawing their opening matches, victory here could put either side in a strong position to qualify for the Round of 32.
Form Guide
New Zealand have struggled for consistency in recent months despite showing resilience against Iran.
The All Whites have often found goals difficult to come by, having failed to score in five of their last six defeats.
Egypt also arrive searching for consistency after winning just one of their last six competitive matches inside 90 minutes. However, the North Africans have shown defensive organisation and discipline in several recent performances.
Five of Egypt’s last seven matches have produced under 2.5 goals.
Head-to-Head Record
This will be New Zealand’s first-ever World Cup match against African opposition.
The two nations last met in a 2024 international friendly, where Egypt secured a narrow 1-0 victory to maintain their unbeaten head-to-head record against the All Whites.
Key Players to Watch
Elijah Just was New Zealand’s standout performer against Iran, scoring twice to become the first Motherwell player to net at a FIFA World Cup.
Interestingly, each of his previous nine scoring appearances for New Zealand ended in victory for the All Whites.
For Egypt, Omar Marmoush remains one of the key attacking threats. Eleven of his international goals have come in matches Egypt avoided defeat, while seven of his last nine goals for the Pharaohs have been the second goal of the game.
Team News
New Zealand will be without Matt Garbett for the remainder of the tournament due to injury.
Egypt, meanwhile, appear to have a fully fit squad available for selection heading into the encounter.
Hot Stats
The half-time result has been repeated at full-time in all seven of New Zealand’s World Cup matches.
Ten of the 13 goals Egypt have conceded at the World Cup came after half-time.
Only three of Egypt’s eight World Cup matches have seen both teams score.
Kick Off Time
The Group G fixture between New Zealand and Egypt will be played on Monday, June 21, with kick-off scheduled for 01:00 GMT in Vancouver.
