Nico Williams made millions of Spaniards understand immigrant stories â?? Inaki

Athletic Bilbao forward Iñaki Williams says his younger brother Nico Williams has helped millions of Spaniards connect with the experiences of immigrant families after Spain’s 2026 World Cup triumph.

Iñaki shared an emotional tribute to Nico following Spain’s victory over Argentina, describing the winger’s achievement as something that went beyond football and represented the sacrifices made by families searching for a better future.

The Williams family’s journey has its roots in Ghana. In 1994, their parents, Félix and María Williams, left the country and endured a dangerous 3,000-kilometre trek across the Sahara Desert before settling in Spain. María was pregnant with Iñaki during the journey.

While Iñaki later chose to represent Ghana at international level, Nico became a key figure for Spain, helping the country secure World Cup glory with a decisive extra-time assist in the final.

“Brother, you have won the World Cup. You have made history,” Iñaki wrote.

“But beyond the trophy, thank you for this: you have made millions of immigrants like our parents feel proud that their future children can one day experience what you have experienced.”

He added: “You have made millions of spaniards empathise with our story — a story that belongs to all the people who leave everything behind in search of a better future.”
