Ghana’s Black Queens came from behind to beat Cote d’Ivoire 2-1 in Casablanca on Thursday and secure a place in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup intercontinental playoff.
The Black Queens fell behind in the fourth minute when Ines Konan converted from the penalty spot to give Cote d’Ivoire an early lead.
Ghana responded strongly after the break, with Princess Marfo restoring parity in the 59th minute.
The comeback was completed in the 72nd minute when Josephine Bonsu converted from the penalty spot to put the Black Queens 2-1 ahead.
Ghana held on through the closing stages to secure a crucial victory and keep their World Cup qualification campaign alive.
The victory came in the WAFCON play-in, which was introduced to determine the two African teams that will advance to the six-team preliminary round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Intercontinental Playoff Tournament.
The Black Queens will now continue their pursuit of a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, having overcome Côte d’Ivoire after their quarter-final exit at the WAFCON.
