Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler is counting on the club’s experienced players to provide leadership and help guide emerging talents as he builds a new-look squad for the upcoming season.
The Porcupine Warriors continued their pre-season preparations with a 1-0 victory over Heart of Lions at the University of Ghana Stadium warm-up pitch on Tuesday.
Kotoko have significantly reshaped their squad following an eighth-place finish last season, with several established players leaving while younger talents have been brought into the team.
Tinkler says the responsibility now rests with the senior players to help the younger members of the squad adapt and maintain the standards required at the club.
“Yeah, leading, leading, they need to be the leaders. They need, you know, their experience, both of the league and obviously also abroad, is going to be beneficial to some of the younger players,” he said.
The coach specifically pointed to youngsters Abu, Lawson and A Fory, who have progressed from the club’s youth setup.
“We got three youngsters. You saw Abu, you got Lawson, youngsters that have come up from the youth, and they need to be led in the right direction,” Tinkler added.
Experienced returnees Danlad Ibrahim and Richard Boadu, both former Kotoko captains, are also expected to provide leadership within the squad.
Tinkler wants the senior players to take responsibility for developing the youngsters while preserving a winning mentality as Kotoko prepare for the new campaign.
