Cambuur captain Jamal Amofa slams Feyenoord fans after fireworks incident

SC Cambuur captain Jamal Amofa has expressed his disappointment after his side’s 5-2 defeat to Feyenoord was overshadowed by a fireworks incident involving visiting supporters.

Cambuur made a bright start to the match and appeared confident in the opening stages, but the contest was temporarily halted after just 12 minutes when fireworks were thrown from the Feyenoord section towards the home supporters.

Amofa, 27, was particularly frustrated by the disruption, insisting that the actions of a small group of fans spoiled what had been an encouraging start for Cambuur.

“It’s such a shame. You see how we come out of the dressing room in the first twelve minutes. The crowd was fully behind us. We try and dare to do a lot. We’re just playing well in the game and then a small group of supporters has to ruin it,” Amofa told ESPN.

The defender also expressed concern for those affected by the fireworks, saying several Cambuur supporters were injured.

“We all just want to play football and have fun with the game. They throw fireworks at our supporters, injuring several people. That is simply not pleasant,” he added.

The Dutch-born Ghanaian admitted that the stoppage affected Cambuur’s momentum, although he refused to use the incident as an excuse for the heavy defeat.

“That temporary strike really didn’t do us any good either, but ultimately that shouldn’t be an excuse,” he said.

Despite the disappointing result, the Cambuur captain believes his team is showing signs of improvement. He highlighted their increased patience in possession, better pressing and greater confidence on the ball.

“Today it was simply men against boys. Week by week we will do better, but the points are really needed. I do see progress: we keep the ball longer, are more patient, and apply better pressure,” Amofa concluded.
