From Edmond Gyebi, Tamale..
He entered into the 2016 electioneering campaign with immeasurable and unshakable confidence and was sure of an overwhelming victory even at the last lap of his campaign. He believed in his ability, capability, popularity and above all, the work he claimed he had done in his constituency and Ghana as a whole.
But Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry has lost his Nanton parliamentary seat to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Alhaji Hardi Tuferu.
Certified results from the Electoral Commission on Wednesday showed that the NPP’s parliamentary candidate had won the seat by 11,346 votes as against Murtala’s 10,451.
The outcome of the election actually shocked Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and the entire NDC fraternity, since the incumbent MP had earlier bragged on many media platforms and given strong assurance of winning the seat again.
In his last interview with the media in Tamale, Mr. Murtala called the bluff of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He insisted on defeating the NPP parliamentary Candidate even if Dr. Bawumia and Nana Addo joined Alhaji Hardi Tuferu to contest him in Nanton.
“I want you to read my lips; the NPP candidate in my constituency will be the worse candidate ever and if Nana Addo and Bawumia decide to come and contest in Nanton, I promise I will beat them with a very wide margin.
“Again, read my lips, the NPP candidate will not win up to 10 communities out of the 75. I am going to beat him resoundingly; if Nana Addo and Bawumia leave the Presidency and contest in Nanton I will beat them resoundingly”.
However, Ibrahim Murtala’s dream of leading the people of Nanton hit the rock, when he lost with 895 votes difference to the man he underrated so much.
Mr. Murtala was apparently over confident and therefore relied possibly on his popularity and acceptability of the NDC in Nanton and the entire Northern Region.
He mentioned that his achievements were overwhelming and open for all to see, and thus could not see why the people would vote against him.
In trying to further ascertain the possible factors that worked against the victory of Mr. Murtala, his blatant accusation against some of his colleague MPs from the region of plotting to unseat him quickly emerged.
In 2015, the Nanton MP without mentioning names hinted of a grand plan by one of the Ministers of State from Tamale to unseat him.
He exploded on Tamale based Diamond FM in an interview, saying: “Someone who said to three people, Murtala has not incurred my wrath, I simply don’t want him to succeed: I just don’t want him to succeed in life. Are you God, who are you,” the angry Nanton legislator fumed.
It is, therefore, not clear as to whether the unnamed saboteurs of Mr. Murtala actually worked against his victory in 2016. Efforts to speak with Mr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed proved unsuccessful.
