The Eastern Regional Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned the brutal assault on Peace FM’s Eastern Regional Correspondent, Mr. Michael Akrofi, by a police officer stationed at the Tafo-Kukurantumi Formed Police Unit (FPU).
The incident occurred at Kukurantumi in the Eastern Region while the journalist was lawfully covering a demonstration by farmers protesting the alleged destruction of their crops by Fulani herdsmen and their cattle.
According to the victim, the police officer attacked him from behind and strangled him on three separate occasions. The officer is further alleged to have issued threats against the journalist after the assault.
This is contained in a release issued by Mr. Ampem Darko Koranteng Stephen,
Eastern Regional Chairman on Monday, January 12, 2026.
Mr. Akrofi sustained injuries from the attack and complained of severe pains in his neck, back, and waist, forcing him to seek medical treatment at a health facility in a matter that has since been formally reported to the Eastern Regional Police Command.
However, as at the time of issuing this statement, the victim had received no official response or feedback from the police authorities.
The GJA describes the incident as barbaric, unprofessional and a blatant violation of press freedom and views the assault as a direct attack on the constitutional right of journalists to work freely without fear, intimidation or violence.
To the regional chairman, journalists play a critical role in informing the public, particularly during tense situations such as public demonstrations, and must be protected rather than assaulted by security personnel.
The Association is, therefore, calling on the Inspector-General of Police and the Eastern Regional Police Command to immediately investigate the incident, identify the officer involved, and ensure that appropriate disciplinary and legal actions are taken in accordance with the law.
The GJA insists that acts of impunity by security officers against journalists must not be tolerated.
The GJA further underscores the urgent need for improved collaboration and mutual respect between journalists and security agencies where clear understanding of roles, adherence to professional standards, and respect for democratic freedoms are essential to maintaining public order.
The Association stands in full solidarity with Mr. Michael Akrofi and assures all media practitioners of its continued commitment to advocating for their safety and rights as the GJA will closely monitor the handling of this case and take all necessary steps to ensure that justice is served.
