The Circuit Court in Accra has remanded two persons, a Chinese national and a Ghanaian, over their alleged involvement in unlicensed gold trading activities.
The accused, identified as Liu Shaobo and Abdul Rahman Hamza, were remanded into police custody by Her Honour Evelyn Asamoah.
The court did not take their pleas when the case was called last week. They are expected to reappear before the court on March 2, 2026.
According to the charge sheet, the two are facing counts of conspiracy and engaging in a business in the gold trading and marketing industry without a licence issued by the Ghana Gold Board.
Prosecution, led by Simon Nyaho, told the court that the accused persons allegedly agreed to purchase fourteen plates of a metallic substance, suspected to be gold, without the required licence.
The alleged offences are said to have occurred on February 17, 2026 at Ahwodwo in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
Presenting the brief facts, the prosecution stated that the complainants are officers of the Ghana Gold Board Taskforce, comprising personnel from the National Security Council Secretariat and the Police.
The prosecution said the taskforce acted on intelligence suggesting that Liu Shaobo and other foreign nationals were engaging in gold trading and related activities in contravention of the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), which regulates participation in the gold trading sector.
On February 17, 2026 the taskforce was dispatched to Ahwodwo in Kumasi, where the accused persons were reportedly operating.
Officers, posing as potential gold sellers, were led to the accused persons’ office after expressing interest in selling gold.
The prosecution said Liu Shaobo allegedly accepted to buy the gold, negotiated with the officers, and requested to inspect the commodity.
The team subsequently effected the arrest of the accused persons.
A search conducted in one of the rooms, the court heard, led to the discovery of 5.04535 kilograms of gold. The substance has since been confirmed as gold by the Assay Laboratory of the Ghana Gold Board.
An amount of GH¢616,550.00, along with equipment believed to be related to gold trading, was also retrieved during the operation.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
