In a dramatic maritime operation, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) successfully rescued stranded Ghanaian fishermen who were attacked by armed robbers approximately 35 nautical miles off the coast of Gomoa Nyanyano and Senya Bereku.
According to the Ghana Armed Forces’ official X handle, the distress incident occurred when the assailants dispossessed the fishermen of their outboard motors and personal belongings, leaving several boats adrift. Affected vessels included Argentina 2, Argentina 3, Sea Lion, and Berema Nsukwa, among others.
The Ghana Navy, with critical support from the Ghana Air Force and local fishermen from the affected communities, launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation at dawn. The Ghana Navy Special Boat Squadron deployed fast interceptor crafts, while other naval ships from the Eastern and Western Naval Commands assisted in the operation.
The rescue mission successfully evacuated 71 fishermen—24 were brought safely to Tema and 47 to Senya Bereku. Interviews with the rescued fishermen confirmed that no kidnappings occurred during the attack.
The Armed Forces confirmed that the Ghana Navy continues to patrol Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone and urges all maritime operators to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.
The operation was further bolstered by the support of Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, Member of Parliament for the area, along with local fisherfolk who assisted the security forces in the rescue.
In its statement, the Ghana Armed Forces reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Ghanaian fishermen, combating piracy and armed robbery at sea, and ensuring the safety of vessels operating within Ghana’s territorial waters.
