John Dramani Mahama is expected to deliver his much-anticipated State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament today, February 27, where he will account for his administration’s performance over the past year and outline plans for the months ahead.
The constitutionally mandated address will provide an overview of the country’s condition, with attention to key sectors including the economy, infrastructure, education, healthcare and energy.
Members of Parliament, government officials, representatives of the diplomatic corps, traditional authorities, civil society groups and other stakeholders are expected to attend the sitting. The annual address traditionally shapes national debate and signals the government’s policy direction.
Economic matters are likely to dominate the President’s speech. He is expected to speak on inflation, public debt management, revenue generation, job creation and ongoing efforts to stabilise the macroeconomic environment.
With many Ghanaians concerned about prevailing economic challenges, the President is anticipated to outline measures introduced to stimulate growth, attract investment and ease the burden on households and businesses.
Infrastructure development is also expected to feature prominently. The President may highlight progress in road construction, housing, water and sanitation projects, as well as other public works across the country. Updates on flagship programmes and new initiatives aimed at accelerating development are also anticipated.
On education, the address is expected to touch on reforms to improve access, quality and equity. Areas likely to be covered include expansion of school infrastructure, teacher recruitment and training, growth in technical and vocational education, and policies to strengthen tertiary institutions.
