The Northern Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged assault of renowned Ghanaian visual artist, Ibrahim Mahama, reportedly involving some police officers in Tamale.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, the Police confirmed that inquiries are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, which has sparked public concern and media attention.
“The Command assures the public that updates of the ongoing investigation will be duly communicated,” the statement noted, signaling a commitment to transparency as the case unfolds.
The Police, however, firmly dismissed claims circulating in sections of the media that the Special Operations Team—popularly known as the “Black Maria”—was involved in the alleged assault. According to the Command, the unit had already been withdrawn from the Northern Region by the Inspector-General of Police on March 5, 2026, and could not have played any role in the incident.
While details of the alleged assault remain unclear, the development has heightened scrutiny over police conduct and the use of force, particularly involving high-profile individuals.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to be closely watched, as it may have broader implications for accountability within the security services and public confidence in law enforcement.
