The Circuit Court in Tarkwa has sentenced a 40-year-old mason, Samuel Okyere, to 10 years’ imprisonment for defiling his 13-year-old daughter.
Presided over by Her Honour Bernice Mensimah Akoh, the court convicted Okyere after he pleaded guilty simpliciter to charges of defilement of a child under 16 years and incest, contrary to Sections 101(1) and (2) and Section 105 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Samuel Ahiabor told the court that the complainant, a trader and mother of the victim, has been married to the convict for 14 years.
The couple have four children, with the victim being the eldest.
According to the prosecution, on January 19, 2026 at about 11:00 p.m., the complainant woke up and found the convict engaging in an indecent act with their daughter, in their matrimonial room at Low-Cost, Tarkwa.
She raised an alarm and intervened, stopping the act.
The incident was reported to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service in Tarkwa. The victim was issued a medical form and examined at the Apinto Government Hospital.
Investigations revealed that the abuse had been ongoing since 2025, usually occurring when the complainant left home early for work. The accused later admitted to the offence in his caution statement. He was subsequently charged and convicted on his own plea.
