The government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing all bypass projects on the Accra–Kumasi highway by the end of 2027, with Roads and Highways Minister, Kwame Governs Kwame Agbodza, assuring contractors and the public that ongoing road expansion works remain a top national priority.
Speaking during an inspection tour of road projects along the corridor on Monday, May 11, 2026 the Minister stressed that the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway would not replace the existing highway dualisation and bypass projects, but rather complement them, as part of a broader transportation infrastructure strategy.
According to him, government remains determined to ensure the completion of all bypasses and ongoing works on the busy highway corridor, despite the introduction of the new expressway project.
“The government has the intention to build a new road known as the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, which is not a substitute for the existing Accra–Kumasi Highway,” Mr. Agbodza stated, during the tour, adding “It is supposed to complement that one.”
The Accra–Kumasi Highway remains one of Ghana’s most economically important transport corridors, linking the national capital to the Ashanti regional capital and serving as a major trade and commercial route through the Greater Accra, Eastern and Ashanti regions.
The route forms part of the N6 highway network and carries thousands of passengers and heavy-duty vehicles daily.
Several bypasses along the highway were initiated to ease congestion in major towns and improve travel times between Accra and Kumasi.
However, many of the projects have experienced delays over the years, due to funding constraints, compensation issues and outstanding payments to contractors.
During the engagement with contractors, Mr. Agbodza indicated that discussions on timelines, financing and implementation had progressed significantly, expressing confidence that most of the ongoing projects could be completed by the end of 2027, if work proceeds according to schedule.
The Minister also sought to calm fears that the launch of the new expressway initiative could divert attention and resources away from the current highway expansion works.
He explained that the planned Accra–Kumasi Expressway is envisioned as Ghana’s first major access-controlled commercial highway that would significantly reduce travel time between the two cities.
Unlike the existing highway, the expressway is expected to operate as a tolled road designed for faster travel and modern traffic management.
Mr. Agbodza said the two projects would serve different categories of road users, with motorists having the option of choosing between the faster tolled expressway and the existing highway.
He further assured contractors that government was working to address outstanding debts owed for road projects nationwide, noting that substantial payments had already been made to reduce arrears inherited in the sector.
