Businessman and philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo has donated relief items valued at GH¢1.45 million to victims of the recent floods that devastated several communities in Accra, calling on the private sector to complement government’s efforts in supporting affected families.
The donation followed the June floods which destroyed homes, displaced families and swept away livelihoods across parts of the capital.
Communities that benefited from the intervention included Mamobi, Nima (Berlin Bridge), Alajo Assemblies of God, Alajo Central, Alajo North, Quay Mensah and Kaneshie Station.
Residents received bags of premium perfume rice, cartons of canned tomatoes, tins of milk and bales of cloth, as part of the relief package aimed at helping them rebuild their lives.

Speaking during the distribution at Mamobi, Alhaji Agongo said he was not only providing relief but also appealing to the conscience of Ghana’s business community to support vulnerable people during times of crisis.
“It is disheartening to see the entire burden of this calamity resting squarely on the government’s shoulders,” he said.
“We rise together, or we do not rise at all. We cannot afford to be mere spectators while our brothers and sisters suffer.”
He stressed that wealth should be measured not only by financial success but also by the positive impact made in the lives of others.
The latest intervention adds to Alhaji Agongo’s long record of philanthropy. Over the years, he has supported education and healthcare initiatives by building and renovating schools, paying school fees for underprivileged students and settling medical bills for vulnerable patients.
“As a Muslim, my faith teaches me that service to mankind is service to Allah. Giving is not a choice; it is a duty. I am privileged to be able to share with others,” he said.
Beyond the relief exercise, Alhaji Agongo urged government and state institutions to intensify the enforcement of laws against indiscriminate waste disposal and illegal construction on waterways, while prioritising regular desilting of drains to curb perennial flooding.
He expressed concern that nearly 70 years after independence, Ghana continues to grapple with recurring floods despite having the human, technical and natural resources to address the problem.
According to him, implementing strict measures may initially be unpopular but is necessary to provide lasting solutions.
He further called for a non-partisan approach to tackling flooding, noting that the disaster affects all citizens regardless of political affiliation.
“The flood does not discriminate. It is a national challenge that requires all stakeholders to work together to protect lives and property,” he said.
