Mahama Backs Jamaica’s Slavery Reparations Petition

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s support for Jamaica’s planned petition to King Charles III on slavery reparations, while celebrating the longstanding historical and cultural ties between Ghana and the Caribbean nation.

According to a post published on the official X account of the Presidency (@JubileeHouseGH), President Mahama made the remarks when he addressed a special joint sitting of the Jamaican Houses of Parliament during his official visit to the Caribbean country.

The President described the relationship between Africa and the Caribbean as one forged through a shared history, saying “the story of Jamaica is, in many respects, the story of Africa.”

He paid tribute to the courage and sacrifices of enslaved Africans whose labour and resilience helped shape societies across the world, stressing the need to pursue reparatory justice through truth, accountability, reconciliation and healing.

President Mahama also announced that Ghana fully supports Jamaica’s planned petition to King Charles III seeking justice over the legacy of slavery.

He further highlighted the resilience, excellence and achievements of people of African descent, saying their history is not defined solely by suffering, but also by strength, innovation and remarkable accomplishments.

The Presidency shared details of the President’s address in a post on its official X account, underscoring Ghana’s commitment to strengthening relations with Jamaica and advancing conversations on historical justice and cooperation between Africa and the Caribbean.
