The Assemblies of God, Ghana, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to stand firm on his stance against LGBTQ practices, following Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, USA, withdrawing the conferment of an honorary doctorate upon him.
According to the Church, the university’s decision does not dishonour President Mahama, but instead highlights the integrity of both him and the Assemblies of God, Ghana, of which he is a proud member.
A press statement issued in Accra yesterday, signed by General Secretary Reverend Ernest Birikorang, said that there is “nothing but joy” within the leadership and membership of the Assemblies of God, Ghana.
“The joy is unconfined because our member has been found worthy of global disdain for his ironclad stand against LGBTQ practices. It resonates with the biblical scenario in Acts 5:41, when ‘the apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name of the Lord,’” the statement added.
The Church noted that President Mahama has consistently articulated his position on homosexuality as “scripturally or biblically forbidden,” morally degrading, and culturally unacceptable — a stance that remains resolute and unshakable.
“Assemblies of God, Ghana, urges all its members serving in the public or private sectors to be encouraged by this example and to never compromise their spiritual principles or moral values under any circumstances. We further ask our members, in particular, and the Christian community, in general, to pray with intensity and tenacity so that the nation may avoid the sins of LGBTQ and others which carry incalculable consequences,” the statement emphasised.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Embassy in the United States expressed profound disappointment over Lincoln University’s decision. The withdrawal of the honorary doctorate, scheduled for Thursday, March 26, reportedly arose from concerns raised by a group at the university regarding President Mahama’s perceived position on Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-gay Bill, currently before Parliament.
The embassy stated that these concerns were not raised during the university’s earlier due diligence and vetting processes, despite extensive prior engagement with the Ghanaian mission.
