Bumpata D/A School in the Kwahu Affram Plains South District of the Eastern Region is in distress as the school is struggling to have conducive classrooms, teaching and learning materials and furniture.
About 40 kindergarten pupils have been displaced following the collapse of bamboo shed put up by the community as classroom.
The displaced Pupils have been compelled to combine class two with class one (1) pupils as they compete for space and chairs forcing some of the pupils to use discarded plastic buckets as seats.
Ghone News’ Eastern Regional Correspondent Kojo Ansah who visited the Community reports that Bumpata JHS which serves four (4) other Island Communities namely Hliadzi, Ahiatroga, Djogbevia and Agbokpa has no classroom block therefore pupils study under trees and use a bamboo shed generator powered video Center built by a community member as a classroom.
Other pupils in class one (1) to six (6) are improvising in a dilapidated mud classroom block built by the Community and the pupils a decade ago.
Text books, chalks, and other teaching and learning materials are not forthcoming compelling teachers to use their little earnings to buy few of the text books to teach the pupils.
The situation is negatively affecting teaching and learning.
The Headmaster of Bumpata D/A School, Jefferson Kportufi told Ghone News, the lack of furniture, teaching and learning materials and conducive learning environment is negatively affecting delivery of quality education.
He fessed up that, only 30% of pupils in the school can read and write.
Assembly Member for the area, Atitsogbey Gideon, told Ghone News, inhabitants have over the years been supportive to the school averting closure but support from government is not forthcoming impacting negatively on the quality of education.
The distress state of Bumpata D/A School contravenes the Sustainable Development Goal 4 which enjoins countries to ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning.
The Community therefore wants urgent government intervention in the School to enable the about 400 pupils in the school get access to quality education.
