The South African Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture has issued a firm denial of widespread reports claiming the country is set to host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), clarifying that Morocco remains the officially designated host for the tournament.
The confusion arose following public comments from South Africa's Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, who stated that South Africa would take over hosting duties. This sparked significant media speculation that Morocco had withdrawn from staging the event.
In an official statement, the ministry moved to set the record straight. It explained that South Africa has merely expressed its readiness to support the Confederation of African Football (CAF) if the need for an alternative host arises.
The Ministry stressed that no formal decision to relocate the tournament has been made and that CAF has not activated any process to identify a replacement host at this time.
The 16th edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to be held in Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026. South Africa, which last hosted the tournament in 2010, has reiterated its position as a supportive standby rather than the confirmed host, ending days of uncertainty over the prestigious continental competition.
