Despite a recent dip in direct goal contributions, Ernest Poku continues to be highly valued at Bayer Leverkusen and retains the full trust of head coach Kasper Hjulmand.
The winger, who arrived from AZ Alkmaar in mid-August for 10 million euros, made a strong initial impact and is still seen as an important part of the team’s attacking structure.
Hjulmand views Poku’s form with calm realism, stressing that the Dutchman has made big strides since joining and still plays a key tactical role. He particularly praised Poku’s understanding with left-back Alejandro Grimaldo. By holding the wide position on the flank, Poku stretches the opposition and creates room for Grimaldo to move inside from deeper areas, adding variety and unpredictability to Leverkusen’s build-up play.
Individually, the coach also pointed to near-miss moments, such as a recent chance against Werder Bremen, noting that one goal could quickly change outside perception.
With three games in six days, Hjulmand acknowledged that rotation is possible but framed any potential rest for Poku as load management rather than a response to poor performances.
Overall, he remains satisfied with Poku’s broader profile and his ability to open spaces for teammates in the final third.
