Senegal midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye has strongly criticised the decision to strip his country of the Africa Cup of Nations title, insisting the team earned the trophy on the pitch.
Gueye, reacting to the controversial ruling that awarded the title to Morocco, described the decision as unfair and out of line with what transpired during the final.
“I think this decision is just ridiculous. We won the game on the pitch, not in offices, and as a Senegalese player I’m proud of what we did,” he said to Sky Sports.
The Everton midfielder maintained that Senegal deserved to be crowned champions, stressing that their performance in the final left no doubt.
“We deserve this trophy. We fight on the pitch, and everyone knows what happened. If you play this game 10 times, we would win it 10 times,” he added.
Gueye also raised concerns about the broader impact of such decisions on African football’s image.
“The most important thing is what happens on the pitch, not what is written on paper. Africa doesn’t need this type of decision,” he said.
His comments add to growing criticism following CAF’s ruling, which Senegal have since challenged at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
