It's been seven years since Ghana progressed beyond the group stage of any major competition. From AFCON disasters to World Cup embarrassment.
The most recent setback was failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, but made up for the miss with a 2026 FIFA World Cup spot.
Despite the excitement of qualifying for the World Cup, many fans have written the Black Stars off following their performances, with the defeats to Austria and Germany in March leading to the sacking of coach Otto Addo.
After two weeks of searching, the Ghana Football Association have settled on experienced Portuguese trainer Carlos Queiroz, who is famous for his roles at Real Madrid and Manchester United, where he worked with Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.
But the question is can Queiroz restore Ghana's football pride in 2026?
Ghana has rich history in the sport, with four Africa Cup of Nations trophies to boast of and a fifth FIFA World Cup appearance to make.
But the glory days have long gone, and even in the last two decades, the highs could not lead to a trophy, with the Black Stars best performance being a quarter-final appearance at the 2010 World Cup. Sandwiching the World Cup high was two AFCON finals in 2010 and 2015.
Ghanaians are desperate to see the triumphant days again, Queiroz boost of the skills-set to lead the Black Stars but it will take more than just his technical know how to perform.
The Black Stars have good players and on a short-term Ghanaians will want to see a good performance at the 2026 World Cup, but in the long run, fans will be expecting silverware.
"And I am ready to give everything of my experience and knowledge once again, in service of the game and the happiness of people," said the Portuguese in his first statement to Ghanaian football enthusiasts.
