WAFCON 2026: Every game is a must-win, says Kim Lars Bjorkegren before Mali clash

Black Queens coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren believes there is no room for complacency as Ghana prepare for their decisive Group D clash against Mali at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Black Queens head into Thursday's fixture knowing a draw will secure qualification for the quarter-finals, while Mali must win to advance.

Although Ghana hold the advantage heading into the final group game, Björkegren insists his players are approaching the contest with the mentality that every match at this stage of the tournament must be treated as a must-win encounter.

"So, it's just fun, and from now on in a tournament like this, it's a must-win game every time you are playing. So, it's nothing special. It's just to grab the moment and enjoy the day."

Ghana began their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Cape Verde before falling 1-0 to Cameroon, leaving qualification to the knockout stage hanging in the balance.

The Black Queens currently occupy second place in Group D on goal difference behind Cameroon, who have already secured top spot with six points.

Victory or a draw against Mali would send Ghana into the last eight and keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil, with only the four semi-finalists earning tickets to the global tournament.
