GNPC Explorco, the upstream exploration and production subsidiary of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), is set to begin crude oil exploration in the Northern Region this year as part of efforts to expand Ghana’s energy sector and drive economic transformation.
The operations will focus on the Voltaian Basin, which covers large parts of the Northern Region and is believed to hold significant oil and gas potential, making it Ghana’s next major hydrocarbon frontier.
As part of preparations for the project, a team from GNPC Explorco, led by the Principal Corporate Affairs Officer, Kwasi Appiah, paid a three-day working visit to Tamale to strengthen strategic partnerships ahead of the company’s planned drilling campaign in 2026.

The visit also formed part of the company’s Christmas activities, during which the team donated food items, educational materials and other essentials to the Tamale Children’s Home as part of its corporate social responsibility.
Mr. Appiah said the visit was to ensure strong collaboration with regional and municipal authorities ahead of operations in the Voltaian Basin.
“We are currently undertaking seismic surveys, after which exploration and production activities will begin. The Northern Region will serve as our operational base as we prepare to commence drilling in 2026, with the aim of starting in the third quarter,” he said.
He said the company was committed to a “Ghanaians-first” strategy, prioritising local content, employment and capacity building.
“We are mandated to build national capacity for independent operatorship and to lead the exploration of Ghana’s inland sedimentary basins, especially the Voltaian Basin,” he added.

During the visit, the delegation met with the Northern Regional Minister, the Regional Coordinating Director and the Mayor of Tamale to align the company’s 2026 operational roadmap with regional development priorities.
Speaking at the donation ceremony, Mr. Appiah said: “Christmas is a time for family and for sharing hope. As a new member of this community, Explorco sees these children as part of our extended family. While our technical work focuses on what is underground, our hearts are with the people above ground.”
He said the company would continue to support vulnerable groups in the region as its operations progress.
The Acting Supervisor of the Tamale Children’s Home, Madam Saratu Sulemana, thanked GNPC Explorco for the donation, saying it had come at a crucial time as the festive season approached.
She, however, expressed concern about the lack of infrastructure at the home, especially the absence of facilities to start a junior high school.
“We are also not safe here because the home is not fenced, which allows public access and puts the children at risk,” she said.
She appealed for support to fence the home and improve its infrastructure as the number of children continues to increase.
