A violent clash at Abunyanya in the Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region last Sunday claimed two lives, with others sustaining various degrees of injuries.
Alhassan Abubakar, the assembly member of the area who also doubles as the Presiding Member of the Nkwanta North District Assembly, said the clash was triggered by a land and chieftaincy dispute which, he added, led to the destruction of shops and motorcycles.
According to Mr. Abubakar, a man started development on the disputed land, which is the subject matter of the confusion. He said individuals from Abunyanya No. 2 attempted to stop him, which led to a violent confrontation, and later calm was restored by soldiers.
Mr. Abubakar said that the District Security Committee summoned the community leaders to resolve the issue. However, the man continued the project, ignoring the District Security Committee’s advice, and the situation escalated with reported gunfire, which led to the death of the two persons, others sustaining injuries, with motorcycles and shops destroyed. Mr. Abubakar disclosed that the Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, has deployed security personnel to Abunyanya to restore calm.
