Champions Asante Kotoko have been knocked out of the Ghana FA Cup after losing to Aduana FC 4-2 on penalties in their Round of 16 encounter on Sunday.
The match ended goalless after regulation time, with both sides failing to find a breakthrough. Kotoko had an early chance to take control of the contest, but Samba O’Neil missed from the penalty spot. Aduana proved more composed in the shootout, converting their kicks to secure qualification to the quarterfinals.
The game was marked by several controversial moments, including appeals from Aduana for a penalty that went unawarded. Despite the disputes, the Dormaa-based side maintained their focus and held their nerve when it mattered most.
Aduana FC will now face Techiman Liberty in the quarterfinal stage of the competition.
For Asante Kotoko, the defeat increases the pressure on head coach Karim Zito. The FA Cup represented the club’s most realistic route to silverware this season, with Kotoko currently eight points behind Medeama SC in the Ghana Premier League. The early exit is likely to intensify scrutiny on the team’s performances and the future of the technical bench.
