The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for armed robbers who attacked the Berekum Chelsea team bus, killing player Dominic Frimpong during the incident at Ahyiresu.
According to a police press release dated April 13, the attack occurred on Sunday night along the Ahyiresu, Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyinahin District at about 10:30 pm.
Police said a VIP bus carrying about 30 players and officials of Berekum Chelsea from Samreboi to Berekum came under attack from six armed men, three of whom were wielding pump-action guns. The driver reportedly attempted to escape but lost control, causing the vehicle to veer into a bush.
During the attack, Frimpong sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.
The police also confirmed that another victim, identified as 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of GH¢4,500 during the incident. Officers retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene to aid investigations.
The Regional Police Command has since deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area as efforts intensify to track down the suspects.
Authorities have assured the public that those responsible will be arrested, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations.
The killing of the 20-year-old footballer has sent shockwaves through Ghana football, with calls for enhanced security measures for teams travelling for domestic matches.
