A member of the communication team at Berekum Chelsea, Albert Diewuo, has confirmed that the club will not withdraw from the Ghana Premier League despite the traumatic armed robbery attack that claimed the life of forward Dominic Frimpong.
The incident occurred as the team returned from their Matchday 29 fixture against FC Samartex at the DUN’s Park, where they had suffered a 1-0 defeat.
Armed robbers ambushed the team bus, leaving players and technical staff shaken and resulting in Frimpong sustaining a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Diewuo revealed that although the squad remains deeply affected, the club has resolved to honour its remaining fixtures while prioritising the mental well-being of the players.
“The team is traumatised after the incident. We will continue with the league and rely on our psychologist to help the players recover for the next games. We are not considering withdrawing,” he said.
Diewuo also shed light on the club’s travel security arrangements, noting that police escorts are not always guaranteed.
“Sometimes we travel with security, sometimes we don’t. We request a police escort; if we get it, we go with them; if not, we move on our own. Yesterday we had no police escort," he added.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Ghana Football Association is expected to engage key stakeholders to reassess and strengthen security protocols for team travel in domestic competitions, with the aim of preventing similar incidents in the future.
