Mohamed Salah will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a hamstring injury, according to Egypt national team director Ibrahim Hassan.
The Liverpool forward was forced off in the 59th minute during his side’s 3-1 Premier League win over Crystal Palace at Anfield. Salah appeared to sustain the injury while sprinting, and he waved to supporters before heading straight down the tunnel.
Initial uncertainty surrounded the severity of the problem, but Hassan has now confirmed the 33-year-old has suffered a hamstring tear that will sideline him for several weeks.
“He has suffered a hamstring tear and will require four weeks of treatment,” Hassan told Reuters, effectively ruling Salah out for the rest of the campaign.
Despite the setback, there is optimism over his longer-term fitness. Hassan added that Salah is expected to recover in time for the 2026 World Cup, where Egypt are set to face Belgium, New Zealand and Iran in Group G.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot had earlier taken a cautious stance when asked if Salah had already played his final match for the club.
“We don’t know, that’s the best answer I can give,” Slot said. “We have to wait and see how his injury is and if he is able to return to play.”
The timing of the injury adds further uncertainty to Salah’s situation at Anfield. The forward has already confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, bringing to a close a remarkable nine-year spell.
Since joining in 2017, Salah has established himself as one of the club’s greatest players, playing a central role in multiple domestic and European triumphs and leaving a lasting legacy on Merseyside.
