Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has expressed gratitude to SC Freiburg’s U23 side after making his long-awaited return from injury earlier this year.
The Ghana international said he was surprised by the reception he received from the reserve squad as he worked his way back to competitive football following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
“I am happy about my time in Freiburg. The team has always supported me, and recently I was taken aback by how the lads in the U23s welcomed me,” Kyereh said during his farewell ceremony after confirming his departure from the Bundesliga club this summer.
Kyereh’s time at Freiburg was severely affected by an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in 2023, which kept him out of first-team action for more than three years.
The 30-year-old returned to competitive football in April 2026 through Freiburg’s U23 side and featured in seven matches during his recovery process.
Despite the long layoff, the attacking midfielder made an immediate impact with two goals and two assists, showing promising signs as he rebuilt his fitness and sharpness.
His appearances with the developmental side became a key part of his rehabilitation before the club and player mutually agreed to part ways at the end of the season.
Kyereh will officially leave Freiburg when his contract expires on June 30, 2026, ending a four-year association with the German club.
The former FC St. Pauli midfielder is now expected to seek a move that guarantees regular playing time as he targets a return to Ghana’s Black Stars setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
