Black Stars defender Jerome Opoku believes Ghana's 1-1 draw with Wales in Cardiff offers a solid foundation to build on as the team intensifies preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Despite throwing away a lead, the Istanbul Basaksehir defender took a positive outlook on the contest, particularly given the challenges of player injuries and head coach Carlos Queiroz's late appointment.
"We felt like we should have won the game, but it's just the little details, and it's something to build on. With the short time we've worked together, I think it's a solid result," Opoku said after the match.
Caleb Yirenkyi scored his debut goal for Ghana to give the Black Stars the lead, but Wales fought back to earn a share of the spoils. Opoku played the entire duration of the contest, delivering a solid performance that should boost his chances of starting in Ghana's World Cup opener against Panama on June 17.
The Black Stars are aiming to play another friendly game before the World Cup commences, as Queiroz continues to fine-tune his squad. Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia, and will be hoping to make a strong impression in North America.
For Opoku, the message is clear: the result in Cardiff may not have been perfect, but it is a step in the right direction.
