Ghana may have already secured qualification for the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but finishing second in Group L could create an unwanted headache for head coach Carlos Queiroz.
The Black Stars booked their place in the knockout stage after results elsewhere confirmed that four points are enough to progress under the tournament's expanded 48-team format.
However, Saturday's clash against Croatia remains hugely significant because Ghana's final group position will determine where they play in the Round of 32.
Should the Black Stars finish second, they will travel to Canada for their knockout fixture.
That could leave Ghana without one of their most influential players, Thomas Partey.
The midfielder missed Ghana's opening group match against Panama after Canadian authorities denied him entry because of his ongoing legal case in the United Kingdom. Partey later joined the squad in the United States and featured in the goalless draw against England after the Black Stars crossed the border.
A return to Canada would cast fresh doubt over his availability unless there is a change in his immigration status before the Round of 32.
For Ghana, that could be a major blow considering Partey's importance in midfield as the competition enters its knockout phase.
The Black Stars can avoid a trip to Canada by either finishing top of Group L or qualifying as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams, both scenarios that would keep them in the United States.
However, neither outcome is entirely within Ghana's control.
Even if Carlos Queiroz's side beat Croatia, they could still finish second if England also defeat Panama by enough to maintain their advantage on goal difference.
Likewise, defeat to Croatia could see Ghana finish third, but with qualification already secured, they would remain in the United States if they progress as one of the best third-placed teams.
As a result, finishing second may not be the most favourable outcome for Ghana despite guaranteeing a higher place in the group.
While every team naturally aims to finish as high as possible, the possibility of losing Partey for another match means the Black Stars could face an unexpected disadvantage if they end the group stage as runners-up.
With qualification already secured, Saturday's meeting with Croatia has become about more than points. It could ultimately determine whether Ghana head into the knockout rounds with one of their key players available.
