Black Satellites fall to Nigeria in WAFU B U-20 Championship opener

The Black Satellites opened their 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship campaign with a 4-2 defeat to defending champions Nigeria in an entertaining Group B encounter at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire, on Monday.

Nigeria made a bright start and took the lead early in the contest, but Ghana responded positively. Captain Kelvin Nkrumah delivered an incisive pass to Mohammed Zaidan, who finished clinically to level the score and bring the Black Satellites back into the game.

The Flying Eagles regained the advantage through a deflected effort before extending their lead from the penalty spot to establish a 3-1 cushion at the interval.

The Black Satellites emerged from the break with renewed determination and reduced the deficit when captain Kelvin Nkrumah calmly converted from the penalty spot, giving Ghana renewed belief. However, Nigeria restored their two-goal advantage with another successful penalty to seal a 4-2 victory.

Despite the result, the Black Satellites showed encouraging attacking moments and demonstrated the fighting spirit that will be vital as the tournament progresses.

Maxwell Konadu's side will now turn their attention to a crucial Group B fixture against Burkina Faso on Thursday, July 30, before concluding the first phase of the competition against Togo on Sunday, August 2. With two group matches still to play, Ghana will be determined to bounce back and strengthen their push for a place in the knockout stage.

Although Ghana has already secured qualification for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as tournament hosts, the WAFU B U-20 Championship remains an important platform for the Black Satellites to build momentum, strengthen team cohesion and gain valuable competitive experience against some of West Africa's finest young talents ahead of the continental finals on home soil.
